The Regional Skill Shortage List

The Regional Skill Shortage List (RSSL)

The Regional Skill Shortage List includes occupations where skilled workers are immediately required in particular regions of New Zealand, where no New Zealanders are able to meet the demand.

  • These regions consist of 15 areas of the country with specific occupational demands, including Northland, Auckland, Waikato, Bay of Plenty, Gisborne, Hawke's Bay, Taranaki, Whanganui-Manawatu, Wellington, Nelson-Tasman, Marlborough, West Coast, Canterbury, Otago and Southland.

  • If your profession is listed, you can assume that there is a high demand for your skills and that not enough New Zealand citizens or residents are available to fill the skill gap.
  • You may be granted an Essential Skills work visa and faster processing of your work visa application will be guaranteed if you are offered a job on the RSSL and meet all further requirements of the visa policy.

"I would like to express our sincere thanks to you and the NZIC team for guiding us through our daunting immigration experience. It's with conviction that I would say we would have thrown in the towel after the first year but you remained steadfast in the belief that we would obtain our permanent residence if we just persevered and followed the sensible route.
