Different banks have slightly different requirements. However, you will always have to:

  • Complete a migrant banking application form;
  • Send certified copies of your passport and residential address; and
  • Provide a copy of your visa.

Once you have completed the application process, you can open a limited access bank account. Limited access means you can deposit any amount, but you won't be able to withdraw money until you have finished the process personally with your identification in a New Zealand branch of your selected bank. This final step can be done as soon as you arrive, allowing you to buy everything comfortably and safely with a debit card, as well as receiving payments from a new employer.
