Broken Heart Gin - Migrant Business Success

Broken Heart Gin is a tribute to friendship – between two Germans meeting and living in New Zealand’s Southern Alps, Queenstown.

Joerg was a pilot and Bernd an engineer. They shared the same passion on what a perfect gin should be like, and then spent three years crafting away at the recipe for what they considered to be a perfect everyday gin.

They had almost found it when Bernd became suddenly unwell and passed away. After months of mourning his dear friend, Joerg realized Bernd would want him to produce and market the Gin which they had worked so hard on together, and named it Broken Heart Spirits in commemoration of his dear friend.

The Gin Garden, Queenstown

The distillery is located in Central Otago and 9 years in the business is growing from strength to strength every day. You can find Broken Heart products in 19 countries, a new dedicated tasting room called the Gin Garden opened in Queenstown at the end of July 2021, the Broken Heart range has extended to 12 different products including Rum, Whisky and Vodka, and between both companies Joerg employs 14 members of staff.

Winning awards nationally and internationally is a clear message the Original Gin, containing a perfect balance of 11 natural botanicals, is a top contender on a global scale. Most recently winning Best New Zealand London Dry at the World Gin Awards 2021, Double Gold at the New York’s 50 Best 2021 and the Double Gold at the NZ Spirit Awards 2020.

20 years ago when Joerg moved from Germany to Queenstown he had no idea this is where he would be and he wouldn’t change it for the world!

Anna was worth her weight in gold---she was fantastic at helping me format my CV and search for jobs that suited my skill set.  In the end, I got a great job in a great city.  Carsten and his team were very thorough and helpful when it came time to apply for and get our visas. They are now helping us with our resident visas, and I'm certain that the process will be the same. I'd recommend them highly.
