About the Job
- The SMO role includes responsibilities for the setting, maintenance and monitoring of aviation medical standards, practices and procedures and related duties within the aviation industry. Some of the key functions include assessing medical reports submitted in respect of applicants for flight crew and air traffic services licences and acting as a medical expert under the Civil Aviation Act flexibility process. You’ll review complex cases, complete research, answer queries from pilots and medical examiners and assist with improvement of advisory information.
- This employer is open to candidates who have a range of aviation medicine experience – from candidates willing to commit to the FACsM training programme up to senior highly experienced specialists.
- This position is 1 FTE. However 0.8 will be considered if you wish to retain 1 day per week of clinical practice.
- Whilst Wellington based, this may be suitable for commute/remote work after a period of time imbedding yourself into the team and the organisation.
About you
- This position requires an empathetic yet effective communicator able to deliver information to different audiences. You’ll be effective in a variety of communication settings: one-on-one, small and large groups, or among diverse styles and position levels. You'll be an attentive listener and easily able to adjust your style to fit the audience and the message
- You will manage and prioritise your time effectively, able to deliver timely and helpful information to others across the organisation
- You are known for embracing best practice and looking for continual improvements
- Your values align with those of the the organisation (Collaboration, Transparency, Integrity, Respect and Professionalism) and will inform your behaviours and how you work.
- Ideally you will hold a Diploma in Aviation Medicine (or equivalent). If not you’ll be willing to undertake appropriate training and have a strong bent towards General Practise, Occupational Medicine or Emergency medicine.
- Existing SMO’s have areas of specialty. If you have cardiology, neurology, mental health and / or AOD expertise, that would be very useful
- The Authority strongly encourages and supports all their people to be vaccinated and boosted against COVID-19. However, the current policy position is that vaccination is not a requirement for employment in this role. Please note that the Authority may, if needed, introduce a vaccination requirement for managing an epidemic.

This is a permanent position with the salary range $182,768 to $256,378. Starting salary will be based on knowledge, skills, and relativities.
