Senior Mechanical Research and Development Engineer

An exciting opportunity to be part of an iconic Christchurch company designing innovative container handling solutions for international markets.

An exceptional engineering opportunity is available at STEELBRO, the world leaders in Sidelifter technology. This is a chance to put your designs in the history book of this 144-year-old Christchurch company. You will take a lead role in taking your concept designs through to volume production.

You will have a passion for the mechanical product development of complex equipment on a large scale. The challenge is to produce innovative ground up designs for our future semi-trailers and container handling cranes, within the constraints of international road transport and crane design standards.

A strong track record of writing presentable engineering design calculations and performing finite element analysis (FEA) on structural assemblies is essential to the role. Your designs are expected to still be working reliably for our customers after up to 30 years on the road!

Core Qualifications:

  • BEng Mechanical Engineering or equivalent

Technology competencies:

  • SolidWorks, 3D CAD
  • ANSYS, Finite Element Analysis
  • Mathcad, Engineering Calculations

Experience:

  • A track record of relevant engineering experience at a senior level
  • Excellence in 3D CAD and Finite Element Analysis of welded structures
  • Strong skill in Mathematics and Mechanical Engineering Calculations
  • High level experience in the design for manufacture of welded structures
  • A knowledge of hydraulic systems would be beneficial
  • Strong practical engineering skills, designing for long term reliability and easy servicing
  • Good track record of producing high quality detailed manufacturing drawings and successful implementation into production
  • Familiar with working within a highly regulated and standards driven industry

  • As part of a small R&D team you must be a positive, self-motivated individual used to making important decisions and weighing up the pros and cons of your designs on your own
  • You’ll enjoy a challenge, be able to communicate your ideas and give the fine detail the attention it deserves  
  • You will be comfortable working from conceptual design level to producing detailed manufacturing drawings
  • Able to travel to our main production facility in China to help bring new developments into full-scale production
