This employer is hunting for a qualified and experienced Diesel Mechanic to join their busy and organised team. Working on the afternoon shift, you'll be happy to work 1pm till 11.30pm Monday to Thursday, and 1pm - 6pm on a Friday, allowing great flexibility for having your mornings to yourself.
Working in Hornby, Christchurch, this site manages and maintains a wide range of trucking fleet which are crucial in the delivery of key services to the public. Not simple cab and chassis environments, there are a range of lifters, hooks and gantries attached to this fleet, meaning there is a need for both hydraulics experience, and ideally exposure to electrical too (though not critical).
Responsibilities of the role require you to:
- Conduct regular inspections of the fleet to identify mechanical issues and perform scheduled maintenance tasks to keep the vehicles in optimal condition.
- Utilize your expert troubleshooting skills to diagnose and promptly repair mechanical problems, including engine, transmission, brake, and electrical issues. Respond quickly to breakdowns and emergency repair requests.
- Ensure all vehicles meet safety standards and regulatory requirements. Conduct tests and quality control checks after maintenance or repairs to ensure they function correctly and safely.
- Utilize welding and fabrication skills to repair damaged or worn-out vehicle components where required.
- Implement measures to improve fuel efficiency in the fleet vehicles, reducing the environmental impact and promoting sustainability.
- Collaborate effectively with fleet managers, supervisors, and team members to report vehicle conditions, maintenance needs, and repair timelines.
- Provide technical support and training to other mechanics and fleet personnel as required.
As the ideal candidate you will have:
- Proven experience as a Diesel Mechanic in a heavy industry vehicle context.
- Trade qualification in Heavy Automotive Engineering - Level 4.
- Strong hydraulic & automotive electric systems diagnostic and problem-solving abilities.
- Knowledge of safety regulations and compliance standards for vehicle maintenance.
- Proficiency in welding and fabrication techniques.
- A clean, full NZ Class 1 & 5 driver’s licence with a current NZ forklift licence.
- Excellent organizational and record-keeping skills.
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
- Outstanding communication skills to liaise with team members and management.
- Commitment to environmental sustainability and waste management best practices.
In return, this employer is offering a very competitive hourly rate of up to $40 per hour commensurate with your experience and the current market.
