Bonus points for expertise in an Identified Future Growth Area

Identified Future Growth Areas*

If your offer of employment in New Zealand, your qualification and your work experience are in an identified future growth area you might be able to claim valuable bonus points for your Expression of Interest.

Industries in identified future growth areas offer New Zealand considerable opportunity to increase its prosperity. 

The following areas are currently classified as identified future growth areas:

  • Biotechnology
  • Information Communications Technology
  • Creative industries (Advertising, Software & Computing Services, Publishing, TV and Radio, Film and Video, Architecture, Design, Designer Fashion, Music and Performing Arts, Visual Arts).

Claim 10 bonus points for a recognised qualification an identified future growth area

A recognised qualification in an identified future growth area will only qualify for points if:

  • the principal applicant has points for current skilled employment or an offer of skilled employment in an identified future growth area, and
  • the qualification is relevant to that employment.

A recognised qualification is relevant to skilled employment in an area of identified future growth if an immigration officer is satisfied that:

  • the major subject area of the recognised qualification is directly applicable to skilled employment in an identified future growth area that qualifies for points, and
  • the skilled employment is in an occupation for which that qualification is a core requirement.  

Claim bonus points for work experience in an identified future growth area 

Recognised work experience in an identified future growth area qualifies for points as follows:

2-5 years 10 points

6 years or more 15 points

Note: To qualify for bonus points, work experience must meet the requirements as set out in Skilled Migrant Category policy.

Recognised work experience in an identified future growth area only qualifies for points if:

  • the principal applicant has points for current skilled employment or an offer of skilled employment in an identified future growth area, and
  •  the experience is relevant to that employment.

Claim 10 bonus points for skilled employment in an identified future growth area

Skilled employment in one of the identified future growth areas set out above will only qualify for points if the principal applicant provides confirmation from their employer, and an immigration officer is satisfied, that their current employment or offer of employment is in one of those identified future growth areas.
